Russia’s FAS: EC Didn’t Confer on ALROSA Trade

[2006-03-07]

(Rapaport…March 6, 2006) Russia's Federal Anti-monopoly Service (FAS) said that they are entitled to know what led to the European Commission (EC) decision to end trade between ALROSA and De Beers effective January 1, 2009.

At a press conference, FAS chief, Igor Artemyev, said his agency should have been involved in clarifying international anti-monopoly legislation. He said FAS would inquire with the EC.

ALROSA has not made further comment on the ruling since its initial press release of February 22, which stated the company would weigh its options. The company's new sales policy sells between 60 and 65 percent of rough at set prices on a long-term basis, while the remaining diamonds would be sold at tender, according to Interfax news.
